The Reminder

The Reminder

On the way to work this morning I made a call to my 87 year old mother. Mom is lonely. Her three daughters live 1,200 miles away, and many of her closest friends and relatives are no longer living. Understandably so, our usual conversation revolves around my mom’s struggle to stay interested and engaged in life. This morning started out the same way, but as she began to tell me about making custard cups for an ailing friend, I heard a bit of kick enter her voice. Mom said that sometimes when she is feeling so down, she forgets how much it helps her to do something for someone else. It was mom who first taught me the value of looking outside of myself to see to the needs of other people. In my growing up years, Mom was always doing special for someone. For me, a good book is one that teaches me something new, refocuses my thoughts, or makes me look at something from a different perspective. But best of all, is when a book does all of these things while encouraging my faith and drawing me closer to God.

You  may be wondering why I am inviting you to the dance floor. If you’ll humor me for a moment or so, I will try to explain. First, take a moment and think about what pictures come to your mind when you reflect on the thought of dancing? Do you envision Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers floating across a ballroom floor? Or is your idea of dancing something more like the famous Michael Jackson “moon walk.” (more…)
